Indeed, there are few individuals in the underground metal scene who rival Dave Slave in terms of both talent and eccentricity. (Necrocock is one of the few that comes to mind.) It has been several years since he has executed a proper release and most of his solo projects are obscure and difficult to find. Doomed and Disgusting is the moniker of the most prominent of Slave’s current projects. Slave plays all of the instruments for Doomed and Disgusting, and the sound is every bit as unsettling and peculiar as Slave himself. With Doomed and Disgusting, Slave primarily focuses on doom of the most unconventional variety as only Dave Slave could produce. The track included on this 7”, entitled “Murder in the Dark,” is more aggressive and manic than much of the previous Doomed and Disgusting output. As such, it is perfectly suited for presentation with the Sadistik Exekution material despite the fact that the recordings are separated by more than 20 years. Of all the extreme underground metal bands to emerge from Australia, Sadistik Exekution was unquestionably among the most highly respected and generally depraved sounding. Sabbat are one of those bands where every release is sterling. These guys' shopping lists are probably more metal than 90% of everything else out there. When I make up my yearly best-of lists, they're really more like "the best of everything else that isn't Sabbat", assuming that Sabbat put out a full-length album that year. Now that the requisite worshipful blather is out of the way, I can review Sabbat's newest album. This one is a good deal better than "Satanasword", which is surprising considering how great that one was. Sabbat's songwriting is in full effect here. "The Letter From Death" is my favorite Sabbat song since "Den of Hades" from Karisma. The eerie, slow intro is just genius, and the concept, vocals, and music are all equally excellent. The other songs are nearly as good, too. "The Answer Is Hell" is a ripping opener, and "In League With Devils" has a catchy chorus and bass line that harks back to the early days of Sabbat. There are two versions of this album, each with different cover art, and one different song. I prefer the Iron Pegasus version, since I like "Registry of Dark Side" a bit better than "Plasmas Goat", but if you're as rabid about Sabbat as I am, you'll probably get both, anyway. There isn't much more I can say about this one. If you have the money for just one album from the last few years, Karmagmassacre should be among the finalists. Highest recommendations. Consequently Rob Urbinati (vocals, guitar), Joe Rico (guitar), Scott Watts (bass) and Gus Pynn (drums) wasted not time in recording the follow-up. »Forward To Termination« saw the light of day not even twelve months later in 1987 (again on Fringe Product).
It was the band’s mentor Brian Taylor who thought it would be best if the band was striking the iron while it’s still hot. So before 1986 ended, Sacrifice went into a basement studio to demo a selection of new compositions. Guitarist and singer Rob Urbinati explains: “We were excited to hear how they would sound, it felt like we were taking a big step forward. Brian played some tracks on his radio show and it created a buzz for our new songs. I think we recorded that in one day.” “That’s correct,” confirms guitar partner Joe Rico: “We decided to try out what the new songs would sound like in the studio, so we got into a small one to check it out, and it came out really good.”
During this session the band also recorded Discharge’s “Possibilities Of Life’s Destruction”, however, the song did not end up on the album. Today, Joe Rico does not have any idea why: “To be honest, I am not sure why we didn't use that song. We all loved Discharge so much back then ...”
One thing was clear though, all in the band preferred »Forward To Termination« over »Torment In Fire«. For Rob Urbinati it was “vastly superior, we felt it then and now.” Joe Rico even goes one step further: “For me it was night and day. The musicianship and songwriting on »Forward To Termination« was more the direction we wanted to go and always really wanted to be.”
The album was also released internationally this time around, being licensed by Roadrunner in Europe and Metal Blade in the States. As a result, the feedback was much healthier, as Rob Urbinati explains: “Definitely. The reviews were better, we started getting better shows. We were gaining a lot of new fans. Word was spreading all around the world in a bigger way.” “Yeah, we started to get attention in the underground,” adds Joe Rico. “Like mentioned elsewhere, we didn't really capitalize on it, otherwise the situation would have been much different, I would say.”
Unfortunately Metal Blade licensing »Forward To Termination« did not result in a full-blown US tour, which was what the band needed at the time to reach the next level. “No,” remarks Rob. “It was difficult for us to get a tour. There wasn’t the tour infrastructure in place yet that there is today. Some bands toured, but many had the same problems as us. Just small tours, a week here a few shows there. Canada was no problem, but it’s a very hard country to tour. Huge area, small population.” Joe also considers the lack of touring as one of the biggest problems Sacrifice faced immediately after the release of »Forward To Termination«: “We played some weekend shows and a short stint with COC and stuff like that. But we didn't play a proper US tour until Bolt Thrower and Believer in 1991.”
However, according to different sources the band managed to film a video for their song “Re-Animation” with a total budget of 500 $ … Rob Urbinati lets his thoughts travel down back memory lane: “I can’t remember how much it cost but we did not have much of a budget. John Zytaruk, the video producer, captured us in a raw way that people could identify with. We didn’t look like rock stars, we looked like our fans. It wasn’t flashy which was what everyone else was doing at the time, it was rough, raw, black and white, it fit the music perfectly. Later on, when I saw Metallica’s first video, I thought it looked like ours.”
Much Music, Canada’s equivalent to MTV, used “Re-Animation” as an intro to their regular metal show. This must have been good promotion for Sacrifice as the accompanying video got into heavy rotation as well … A classic win-win situation? “We had no idea,” confesses Rob Urbinati. “We thought they might play it once or twice, it was very heavy for the time. They played it way more than any of us expected and helped us get to the next level.” His colleague Joe Rico confirms: “We became known for that and definitely garnered more attention. I think every metalhead in Canada knew who we were because of that.”
Today all around the world Sacrifice are hailed as a cult band, their two albums being regarded as raw thrash metal classics. Singer and guitarist Rob Urbinati wouldn’t have it any other way: “Our music is honest music. We are not a band trying to be the next huge thing. It’s a band playing what they want on their own terms and saying fuck you to anyone who doesn’t get it. This was for our people. All the ones who wanted faster and heavier metal. We wanted that too, so we made it. Sacrifice is the last classic thrash band with the original line-up still intact. We are like family. None of us are virtuosos individually, but if you put the four of us together, we will burn the place to the fucking ground.” His guitar partner Joe Rico, however, thinks that given the chance, Sacrifice could have been a much bigger band than they are today: “We did not grow in stature I would say because we didn't tour or do much in the promotion of our records when they came out. I am pretty happy in our niche spot in the metal world though. I think people want us to continue being heavy and as being their own personal thrash band.”
As mentioned, Sacrifice always was a band for the people, Kenny Hallman of Infernäl Mäjesty, contemporaries of Urbinati, Rico, Watts and Pynn, puts it like this in the book »Eve Of Darkness – Toronto Heavy Metal In The 1980s«: “Sacrifice never changed their style to please the masses. Some recordings from the early ‘80s sound so dated you can’t even listen to them now. Then you listen to the first or the second Sacrifice albums, they sound like they could have come out today. Bands like them did it right, they just never made it big because they didn’t have the proper people to represent them.”
For Terry Sadler, bass player of fellow Scarborough band Slaughter, Sacrifice indeed “made it”: “There was a hell of a lot of fantastic competition, with all these fine bands racing to the throne. I think that Sacrifice made it to the throne first in Toronto and it was well deserved. They worked hard, played hard and took it seriously. All us other bands fumbled or were tackled and lost our footing.”

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0634/3167/1969/files/1278_sacrificeforwardtoterminationcd_bg.jpg?v=1767752053
sacrifice-soldiers-of-misfortune-lp
Sacrifice - Soldiers of Misfortune LP

Following on from first generation Canadian speed metal pioneers Anvil and Exciter and heavily influenced by local Toronto thrash legends Razor, Scarborough’s own Sacrifice set out to make history a short while later in 1984.
Scarborough is situated at the east end of Toronto, roughly a 20-minute drive away from the city (or alternatively a good hour by public transport). Although there is no question that downtown Toronto was the mecca for metalheads in Ontario, Scarborough always had its own local scene.
When Sacrifice released their debut album »Torment In Fire« in 1986, reactions were really encouraging, at home in Canada as well as globally. Consequently Rob Urbinati (vocals, guitar), Joe Rico (guitar), Scott Watts (bass) and Gus Pynn (drums) wasted not time in recording their follow-up. »Forward To Termination« saw the light of day not even twelve months later in 1987 (again on Fringe Product). It was the band’s mentor Brian Taylor who thought it would be best if the band was striking the iron while it’s still hot.
Sacrifice took a little longer to record their third album »Soldiers Of Misfortune«, which was issued in Canada on Fringe Product in 1990 and on Metal Blade in the States in early 1991. “When we wrote the record, we wanted to play more musically with the same aggression as on the last record,” explains guitarist Joe Rico, “it was the most musical record we have written. There was some really good songwriting on that record.” Co-guitarist and singer Rob Urbinati adds: “We were definitely a lot tighter and better on our instruments. We were also listening to a lot of 70s stuff we grew up with, like Rush, Sabbath, Rainbow, those influences maybe came out a bit more too. The fast stuff was faster, but we also added more dynamics to the songs. Sometimes having a softer guitar part can make the next part even heavier. Our songwriting took another step. I consider »Soldiers Of Misfortune« to be our best album.” Drummer Gus Pynn, who is rarely doing interviews at all, shares the opinion of the majority of his colleagues: “The musicianship was heads and shoulders above what we had done on »Forward To Termination«. We spent a long time writing and perfecting that record. The song writing was way better as well.”
“I just remembered how professional it sounded in the studio,” reflects Joe Rico. “We rehearsed the songs so much that the recording process I thought was easier than previous studio outings.” Gus Pynn can remember the time in the studio as well: “The studio was incredible and that room: it was the same room Rush had used for recordings, and Max Webster recorded ‘Battle Scar’ there. I knew this before I spent 14 hours recording my drums. Most of those songs’ takes were finished in only one to three takes to complete. I was like a machine back then. I loved the task I had to do and I loved the results.” “I remember Brian Taylor, our producer, really pushing us,” adds singer/guitarist Rob Urbinati. “We would do a take and look at each other all smiles. Brian would hit the control room mic and say: ‘That was kind of slow.’ Gus would pick up his sticks, count us in, and we would play at our absolute physical limits. It was a demanding recording, but we were all happy with how it came out.”
Between the release of »Forward To Termination« and »Soldiers Of Misfortune« there was a gap of three years – an unusually long time for Sacrifice back in the days. “It was just the way it was,” says bassist Scott Watts today, “we recorded it in 1989, it just took a while to get released for whatever reasons back then.” “Playing shows, writing,” explains Rob Urbinati how Sacrifice passed the time between the two records. “We hit a wall a few times during writing and we just wanted the songs to be perfect. I’m sure we could have put together a few filler songs together and said ‘here is our album’, but we were never into doing that. If the four of us weren’t all fully committed to a song, we would say ‘fuck it.’”
“The title of the record is pretty self explanatory,” continues Rob Urbinati. “It’s anti-war. Young people sent off to pointless wars and return with mental scars that will always be there, even if they return alive. The people in power moving these chess pieces don’t really give a fuck.”
“Metal Blade was awesome,” is what bassist Scott Watts says about Brian Slagel’s efforts to break Sacrifice with »Soldiers Of Misfortune« in the United States.“ “Brian Slagel is legendary,” is how Rob Urbinati puts it. “Any band will tell you they wish their label did more, but Metal Blade got us exposure we wouldn’t have got otherwise.” There was one disappointment though, Roadrunner did not license the album for Europe. “We couldn’t understand it,” expresses Rob Urbinati, “I am biased, but it’s a pretty good album.”
Once again a video was shot, this time for the title track of the album, as Rob Urbinati recalls: “This video was shot in Montreal at ‘Foufounes’ by producer John Zytaruk who shot our first video for ‘Reanimation’. It received a ton of play here in Canada and a few plays on MTV too. It was cool to watch Lemmy introduce our video on MTV.” “It was really fun and a lot of work,” adds Scott Watts laughing, “good thing we were young back then.” “We had a blast doing the video for ‘Soldiers’,” adds Gus Pynn his side of the story. “My first thought when we started shooting the video was 'wow, we played that one pretty fast.' I still love to watch the video.”
A Canadian tour for »Soldiers Of Misfortune« followed the release of the album. “We've always done well in Canada, so our shows were pretty memorable,” is how Joe Rico remembers the journey. Rob Urbinati thinks so too: “It was great. Playing with Razor in Canada always seemed perfect. We had some difficult times as well, but the crowds were always amazing.” Scott Watts sums up: “Canadian tours were always fun and I think we crossed Canada with this album.”
After the tour for »Soldiers Of Misfortune«, long-time drummer Gus Pynn decided to leave Sacrifice, which came as a shock to the band, as Rob Urbinati explains: “It was difficult for all of us, obviously. Gus wasn’t writing exactly, but his input on drums guided parts of songs.” “It wasn't a great time for us at that time,” is how Scott Watts puts it.
There were rumors already in 1987 that Gus Pynn was supposed to leave Sacrifice, in order to replace Dave Lombardo in Slayer. True or false? Gus Pynn himself laughs: “Ah yes, the Slayer story. Our producer Brian Taylor asked me one night when we were down at the ‘Record Peddler’. He pulled me aside and asked if I wanted to fly out to LA and try out for Slayer. I said no and we went on to record »Forward To Termination« and »Soldiers Of Misfortune« afterward.”
However, some time after »Soldiers Of Misfortune« Gus Pynn did leave Sacrifice for real and was replaced by Mike Rosenthal of local band Dark Legion. “We always knew Mike was a great drummer,” explains Rob Urbinati, “but we felt weird about taking him from Dark Legion. We auditioned a few drummers but they either didn’t have the chops or wouldn’t fit personality wise. We were already friends with Mike and he already knew our entire set.” Scott Watts agrees wholeheartedly: “Mike was a awesome drummer, he was the only guy in Toronto who could fill Gus' shoes for us.”

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0634/3167/1969/files/1312_sacrificesoldiersofmisfortunelp_bg.jpg?v=1767752147
sijjin-helljjin-combat-lp
Sijjin - Helljjin Combat LP

Hark and behold, all ye supporters of the darkest of Metal, the time has finally come.
4 years after the sheer onslaught which was "Sumerian Promises", Sijjin return with their 2nd opus entitled "Helljjin Combat".
The German/Basque trio has delved into depths absolute, focusing their lens on the most antediluvian variety of Death Metal while bringing up a derivative of evil Thrash with utmost evil intent.
The album conjures its own life of satanic imagery, diabolical debauchery and biblical fatalism. Tracked over a period of sessions between September 2023 and May 2024, the eleven-song offering was produced by vocalist/guitarist Rob Urbinati and features the band’s original lineup, with lead guitarist Joe Rico, bassist Scott Watts, and drummer Gus Pynn as well as Urbinati. They are one of, if not the only, 1980s thrash band that still has its original lineup intact and playing together, and on Volume Six, the band hits it out of the park.

“I write all the time,” says Urbinati about the latest album’s origins. “It was around 2017 when I wrote a couple songs that I thought were really good. I played them for the band, and they were totally happy with them and the direction. I wrote a couple more and Gus and I were making some real progress in getting the songs tight and even talking about recording, then the pandemic hit. My creativity completely dried up for whatever reason, even though I was sitting at home with nothing to do. There was nowhere to rehearse in the city because things would shut down, then open up, then close down again, so it was hard to get a consistent rehearsal schedule going and I just wasn’t feeling it. When things started coming back, our original plan was to do an EP, but we had enough songs that we were completely comfortable and happy with to do a whole album.”

The songs on Volume Six run the gamut from speedy, breakneck thrash (“Comatose,” “Explode,” “We Will Not Survive”) to more nuanced, layered, metallic compositions (“Underneath Millenia,” “Your Hunger For War”). Two instrumental tracks on the album show yet another side of the band’s songwriting while still clearly being SACRIFICE songs: “Lunar Eclipse” is a showcase for Rico and Urbinati’s excellent twin guitar leads, while “Black Hashish” is SACRIFICE at their most psychedelic. The album’s final track, “Trapped In A World,” is a cover of ‘80s Toronto hardcore band Direct Action, a group that had a massive influence on the members of SACRIFICE during their formative years. The song features guest vocals by Youth Youth Youth vocalist and Toronto music legend Brian Taylor, who operated the Diabolic Force label in the eighties and produced the band’s first three albums, bringing everything full-circle three decades later with his appearance here.

“SACRIFICE generally has pretty dark themes and a lot of lyrics were written over the pandemic when things were feeling pretty apocalyptic, especially at the beginning of it,” explains Urbinati. “‘Comatose’ comes from us playing in Vancouver a lot and seeing the amount of drug abuse around downtown East Vancouver. It affects you when you’re seeing human beings everywhere with extreme drug problems and paramedics walking around at night in groups of three basically looking for people who have overdosed or died. There’s that, world politics, all the wars going on, natural disasters – half of Canada was on fire last year! – the album is pretty dark, and I think the art conveys the content.”

The stunning front cover artwork for Volume Six was painted by Propagandhi bassist and lifelong SACRIFICE fan Todd Kowalski. There is a mutual admiration between both bands: Propagandhi’s song “The Bangers Embrace,” off their 2009 album Supporting Caste, is a love letter to SACRIFICE about seeing them play live back in 1990. The bands have shared stages over the years and released a split single of covers – SACRIFICE transforms Rush’s “Anthem” into a thrash classic while Propagandhi does a Corrosion Of Conformity song – via the War On Music label in 2010. When Urbinati asked Kowalski about painting the cover he gave him the lyrics and the music and asked him to interpret it visually as he envisioned it.

SACRIFICE originally formed in 1983 in Scarborough, Ontario, a suburb in the east end of Toronto. Taking influence from both the underground metal and punk scenes of the day, the then-teenagers released their debut album Torment In Fire in 1986 and established themselves as a band to watch. It was followed up by 1987’s Forward To Termination, featuring the video single “Re-animation,” which ended up in regular rotation on Canada’s Much Music video station the following year and even became the theme song for the channel’s long running metal music video show, the Pepsi Power Hour. Original Sepultura frontman Max Cavelera recently revealed Forward To Termination to be one of his three favorite thrash metal albums of all time. Their third effort, 1990’s Soldiers Of Misfortune, has been praised as one of the most important Canadian albums ever, making NOW Toronto’s 50 Best Toronto Albums Ever list.

SACRIFICE played a prominent role in the 1980s underground metal scene in Toronto, and along with Voivod, Razor, and Annihilator, is considered one of the "Big 4" of Canadian thrash metal. The band released four studio albums on Diabolic Force in Canada, Metal Blade Records in the US, and Roadrunner Records in Europe before parting ways in 1993. After coming back together to play a reunion concert in 2006, the quartet released their fifth studio album, The Ones I Condemn, in 2009. Since reforming, SACRIFICE has played major international festivals, including Belgium’s Alcatraz Festival, Germany's Keep it True, Peru’s Ai-apaec, Maryland Deathfest and California Deathfest in the United States, and both the 2012 and 2018 editions of Japan’s True Thrash Festival, amongst others.

Sijjin follow the firm path they once took but permanently turn to the south of heaven.

Recorded live at BlackStorm Studios in Karrantza, Basque Country, the new songs brim over with satanic energy, countless tempo changes, vile twists and turns, a demanding instrumental performance and riffs that drag you directly to the lowest point in hell. On top of that, blessed with abysmal strenght as it seems, Gericke's vocals never sounded as raspy and malevolent as on "Helljjin Combat", or to put it simple, dirty as fuck.

Adorned with an authentic and completely dry 80s analog sounding production, the record takes aim like fallen angels, storming the vaults in high heaven.
In stark contrast to the tracks on "Sumerian Promises", Sijjin's newer direction focuses on more extensive song structures as practiced by the godfathers of mid 80s Metal insanity, bringing such infamous names as Infernäl Mäjesty, Nasty Savage, Possessed, very early Slayer or Megadeth to mind.

In conclusion while seeking combat in hell, the trio of Sijjin has once more ultimately testified to be the trident in the left hand of the devil.
So mote it be!

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0634/3167/1969/files/a2648146274_16_4ae3cc65-f54d-42b0-8e47-730edcc22432.jpg?v=1767758758
subversion-trigger-subversion-trigger-cd
Subversion Trigger - Subversion Trigger CD

SUBVERSION TRIGGER was founded in the rain-slicked grit of Seattle by the legendary architect of crossover thrash, Les Evans (Cryptic Slaughter).
